The wait is nearly over. The time has nearly come. Super League XX is nearly ready to be kicked off.
With just 2 days left, here are my top picks of 2015’s shirt number 2s.
Tommy Makinson – Super League’s finest finisher of the 2015 season, Makinson is a quality winger to watch, even for the fans who don’t support his team.
The superb finisher, who may have been unlucky not to have been included in England’s 2014 Four Nations squad, scored some brilliant tries during the 2014 season which had every St Helens fan on their feet. The 23-year-old winger scored a total of 26 tries in the 2014 Super League season, including a try at the Old Trafford against the Wigan Warriors in Super League’s biggest game.
Makinson can finish from all angles in the corner, which led to some of the best tries scored in the 2014 season. Not only does he have talented one-handed finishes, Makinson is also one of Super League’s fastest players from what I’ve seen, which is displayed time and time again down his wing for the Saints. It’s wasn’t just 2014 where his ability was shown either, as Makinson has performed some quality finishes throughout his career.
As well as his finishing, Makinson made a total of 299 carries in the 2014 Super League season, 19 clean breaks, 53 tackle busts and a total of 2486 metres.
I’m expecting to see some more quality finishes from this player in the upcoming season.
Ben Jones Bishop – This winger had to cut his 2014 season short due to an injury, but he’ll be roaring to get back onto the field for his new side, the Salford Red Devils in 2015.
This talented winger has instantly been given the number 2 jersey at the Devils, over Mason Caton-Brown who joined from the London Broncos mid-season in 2014 and played a handful of games for Salford, scoring 6 tries.
Bishop is an athletic, strong, speedy winger that had a big part in the Rhinos’ squad. The 26-year-old made his debut back in 2008 for the Leeds Rhinos and went on to appear 82 times for the club, scoring 56 tries. However, he rejected Leeds’ contracted extension last year, believed to be due to the reason of the little game time he had with the new signing of Tom Briscoe from Hull FC joining the club. Now with game time not looking to be a problem for the winger in the upcoming season, Bishop has his wish and is set for a great season for the Red Devils, in which he’ll be hoping his side can reach the top 8 at the end of the season.
Salford fans, keep an eye out for this one!
Josh Charnley – There’s no doubt in saying that this player scores for fun...
Charnley is a solid winger for the Wigan Warriors and England RL and he doesn’t have trouble crossing the try-line. Although his 2014 season had a pause in the middle due to injury, he still managed to score 19 times in 16 appearances, including 5 his comeback game in June against the Widnes Vikings (which he’ll be hoping to do the same this Thursday, when the Vikings kick off the Super League XX season to the Wigan Warriors at home!).
Josh Charnley, who also helps out on a farm in his spare time, has appeared in every big Rugby League fixture at the age of just 23, including Grand Finals, Challenge Cup Finals and World Club Series. The England international also impresses many fans while representing his country, scoring 8 tries in 7 appearances according to resources.
In 2014, Charnley managed to also make 208 carries, make 18 clean breaks and make 1814 metres, but he did however make a total of 19 errors in just 16 games.
Being a Wigan fan, I’m hoping Charnley can stay fit throughout the 2015 season and continue his great form and try scoring ability in order to help Wigan towards one of the major trophies.
