Not long to go now!
Here's my top 3 picks of number 5s within the upcoming season...
Justin Carney – Justin ‘The Beast’ Carney is definitely one heck of a scary winger. His nickname alone shows what people think of him, and he’s definitely one of the toughest wingers in the competition.
The ex-Sydney Roosters player joined the Castleford side for the 2013 season in great anticipation, and his first year was definitely an impressive one. He scored the fifth most amounts of tries in 2013 and was a talented player to watch. 2014 wasn’t any different for the 26-year-old, scoring 17 tries and playing a strong part in the Castleford team.
The player has incredible strength and a huge fend-off, which allowed him to make 81 tackle busts in 2014, and also 13 clean breaks. He was also at good gaining his team strong metres up the field, making a total of 2578 metres.
With James Clare and Justin Carney with the shirt numbers 2 and 5, Castleford’s wings could be a real force in the upcoming season.
Ryan Hall – The Leeds Rhinos’ number 5 is definitely a loved man within the Super League, no matter who you support.
The England international is a top player, and I hate it when my team plays against him simply because of his skill. Like Carney, Hall is a well-built, solid winger who is as good in defence as he is in attack. No doubt that this winger is the best current English winger in the competition.
Hall scored 16 tries in 2014, while also making 86 tackle busts, 423 carries, 18 clean breaks, 39 off-loads and a total of 3190 metres (the fifth most in the 2014 season!). However, he did make the most errors throughout the whole season (a total of 42!). This player will be looking to cut out the errors in the upcoming season and to continue his great form.
I’m not looking forward to seeing this player face my team...
Joel Monaghan – This was a tough one between Warrington’s J.Monaghan and Wigan’s Joe Burgess. Due to his consistent performances throughout his career with the Warrington Wolves, Monaghan just won me over - and being a Wigan fan, this hurt to write.
Although Burgess looks set for a cracking career after his successful 2014 season, Monaghan has already had one with the Wolves. His solid performances each week have led to him being named as Warrington’s 2015 captain, which shows how important he is to the team. A few have questioned if he can be as big as an impact as someone in the middle of the pitch being the captain, but Castleford’s Michael Shenton shows that good captains can play out-wide, too.
Monaghan is a top quality winger in the Rugby League World, and he’s definitely a try scoring machine. The 32-year-old scored 27 tries in 2014, 26 in 2013 and 20 in 2012! He’s one of Super League’s finest finishers, from acute angles to long-distance tries, there’s nothing that Monaghan can’t finish.
I’m looking forward to seeing how he captains his side in 2015.
