Todd Carney – The Catalan new-boy certainly made headlines when joining the French side at the end of the 2014 season after being sacked by his former team, the Cronulla Sharks. It’s no doubt most people are excited to see what this player can do for the Dragons and for the Super League in 2015.
The 2010 Dally M Award winner and 2013’s Dally M Five-Eighth of the Year has certainly had some ups and downs in his career. On the field, the player can produce magic and is a top attacking player, which has been awarded by being chosen to appear for Australia and New South Wales. However, off the field, this player has some troubles. So far in his career, he has been released by the Canberra Raiders and the Sydney Roosters and has been sacked by the Sharks last year. Carney has shown interest in re-joining the NRL after his time at the Catalan Dragons, though.
The player has plenty of NRL game-time experience, appearing over 160 times within the league and scoring 59 tries. The player is also a great kicker, making a total of 289 conversions in his career so far.
I’m hoping this player can forget his past and behave off-the field, which should lead to a healthy time at the Catalan Dragons, which may also see him become one of Super League’s most popular players.
Danny Brough – I don’t think Huddersfield fans would have spoken to me again if I didn’t include the 2013 Man of Steel winner, Danny Brough...
No doubt that this player is one of the best play-makers in the Super League and plays a massive role in the Huddersfield squad. He’s an inspirational player with lots of skills and Huddersfield Giants wouldn’t be the same without him.
Danny Brough, who led Scotland to a successful 2013 Rugby League World Cup and will now also take part in the 2016 Four Nations with the Bravehearts, is a quality attacking player and shows his passion for his team throughout every match, while also receiving few a ‘slapped wrists’ from the referees.
Brough has some pretty impressive stats from the 2014 season too, having the third-most converted kicks, the second-most drop goals, the most 40/20s and the most try assists (31!). However, this player can also make a few mistakes, too. In 2014, Brough gave away 14 penalties and made a total of 27 errors. But when you have the ball in hand as much as he does, errors will happen which just goes to show that we’re all human.
I can imagine Huddersfield fans can’t wait to see what Brough produces in the coming season.
Kevin Brown – My last pick was a tough one between Castleford’s Ben Roberts and 2014 Super League’s Dream Team’s half-back, Kevin Brown. After some thorough thought and debates on Twitter, I’ve decided to go with Kevin Brown due to past performances. Don’t get me wrong, Ben Roberts looks like he’s going to be class for Castleford, but Brown’s influence over Widnes is what won me over.
This player had a cracking 2014 season and many fans argued that McNamara [England coach] should have included him in the England squad for the 2014 Four Nations, but it wasn’t to be. Brown has a massive impact on the Vikings, just like Brough does for Huddersfield, and he’s a great leader and player.
Brown made a total of 24 try assists in 2014, scored 12 tries, made 360 carries and 233 kicks in general player. However, he did made a total of 34 errors in the 2014 season. Widnes are lucky to have an attacking player such as Brown, and his leadership and skills will hopefully (for Widnes fans) take his side into the top 8 at the end of the season.
