We spoke about his time at Leeds, his current time at Wakefield, what it would mean to represent England plus more! Here's the full interview-
I always like to start off the interview by asking about the player's childhood. So, talk to me about rugby while growing up.
As a kid I was pretty hyperactive. There was a rugby club at the back of my house, so my grandma just took me on there and I seemed to enjoy it.
Do you remember your debut?
I do yeah it was in 2009 vs Crusaders. I can remember sitting in the changing rooms before the game thinking 'is this real?'.
You started your professional career at Leeds before joining the Wildcats in 2013, how were you picked up by the Rhinos?
I was on the Leeds scholarship from being 12, and when I was 16 I was lucky enough to get offered a contract.
You then moved to Wakefield. How did this transfer come about?
Leeds had just signed Paul Aiton from Wakefield which meant my playing time would have been limited. Wakefield offered me the opportunity to join them and play regular rugby.
After spending a long time at Leeds and playing some good rugby there, was it a hard decision to make to leave the club and start on a new journey, or was it something you had wanted for a period of time?
It was difficult, I have some great friend at Leeds and I had learnt a lot there. But I also needed to be playing as much rugby as could. Everybody at Wakefield welcomed me straight away which made it easier.
Was it hard telling the squad at Leeds that you were leaving at the end of the 2013 season after being there for so long and playing alongside some of them for a long time?
Yeah like said I have a lot of close friend there. You're very lucky if you get to stay a 1 club your whole career.
Onto this season. You joined Wildcats for the 2014 season, who are now 12th in the League. Are you enjoying your time at Wakefield?
Yeah, they are a good group of guys here, a really tight group.
Do you and the squad think that the Wildcats can make the top 8 this season?
Our focus is game on game. We can't worry about looking up or down the table. We just need to focus on trying our best for each other week in week out.
How did yourself and the squad react to Richard Agar's departure from the Wakefield Wildcats?
Rich did a lot of good thing for the club since he joined, so the lads respected his decision.
How is the squad going under new coach, James Webster? Are there many different things you now do in training under Webster?
Everything going good. Webbos a really smart bloke. Not much as changed technically.
You've still got a long time in your career left, and you have represented England under 18s, if I'm right. Is there a dream to one day represent England's first team and play international games?
Definitely, why play the sport if you're not wanting to play at the highest level and represent your country. There are a lot of top young Hookers in England at the minute, which is good news for the national side.
What's in store in the future for you, Paul? Would you like to challenge yourself again at a different club or competition, like the NRL, or are you currently concentrating on your current season and performances?
I think the big thing for me is to play as much as possible. I'm still learning a lot so the present is the thing I'm concentrating on at the minute.
What has been your most memorable Rugby League game?
WCC 2012 vs Manly. I'd never played in a play-off game or a final before. So playing against the NRL champions and winning was awesome.
Away from Rugby League, what do you like to do in your spare time?
I coach an open age rugby side!
What's the best stadium you've ever played at?
I've enjoyed the Etihad Magic Weekend. So probably that.
Some team questions-
Who has the worst music taste?
Not really got to know the wakey music much. But Ryan hall has a shocking taste in music.
Who has the worst dress sense?
100% Matt Ryan. I just don't know what thinks when he walks out of the house.
Does anyone in the squad have a bad habit haha?
Richie Mathers is always trying to sell fruit and veg to all the boys!
Does anyone show off in training?
There's a few off the big fellas that fancy themselves as ball players/ kickers.
What's the most embarrassing thing that has happened in training/in the changing rooms haha?
I can't go into detail but it involves Chris Riley and Richie Mathers!
